Is it difficult to import a car from Japan?
Tanin JDM simplifies the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) car importing and buying process. We complete all the negotiating, buying, exporting, importing and stressful paperwork for you. The process is daunting and overwhelming and involves a lot of steps and paperwork. We make buying a JDM car as easy as you purchasing a car domestically from a dealer or private party.
What is the 25 year rule for importing cars?
As soon as a vehicle is 25 years old it is eligible for importing into the United States. We have cars available for pickup in Los Angeles and San Diego. We can also ship your car anywhere in the country. You can look at our current inventory on our For Sale page. We tend to have only a few popular cars in stock because it is difficult to predict what the market wants. We prefer to work directly with you during the purchasing process instead of having pre-purchased inventory on hand.
How long does it take to get a car from Japan?
If you are looking for a specific vehicle from Japan the process typically takes around two months from purchase to delivery. The process starts when the vehicle is purchased from the auction, transported to the port in Japan, and awaits a scheduled roll on / roll off vehicle transportation ship. When the ship leaves Japan it typically takes another month to arrive in Southern California.
What brands of Japanese cars are popular?
We can track down and find any vehicle you want. Our specialty is Mitsubishi and Toyota, but we respect and enjoy all Japanese vehicles.
How do I register a JDM car?
There are many states that allow non-residents to register, title, and put tags on your new JDM car. We can explain some registration options to you. California is typically the most difficult to state register any vehicle. Luckily there are other options available for legally registering and enjoying your new JDM classic. We will provide you with a clean USA vehicle title and bill of sale so you can transfer ownership easily. Another stressful part of the process is walking into a local DMV with a Japanese title, no VIN number, a chassis number, and trying to explain them how to issue you a title. We handle all that stuff.
Are parts for JDM cars easy to find? How do I repair my JDM car?
Luckily, for the majority of JDM imports a lot of parts cross reference between their American counterparts. Aside from the steering wheel being on the opposite side, car manufacturers typically won’t create unique parts just for American vehicles or Japanese vehicles. As an example, oil filters from 1980’s Toyota pickup trucks fit Toyota diesel engines. There is also great aftermarket support for diesel Toyota powertrains as well as Ebay and Amazon sellers that offer regular maintenance items such as timing belts and other gaskets.
